On this episode of Coffee with Cool People, host Chip Munn sat down with Jay Lavrinc, Director of Customer Relations at the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce, to talk about leadership, service, and the power of community.
Originally from Pittsburgh, Jay came to Florence to lead the ABB facility and rose to Vice President of North America before retiring. What was supposed to be a short assignment became a lifelong commitment. For the past nine years, he has poured his energy into the Florence Chamber, helping businesses grow and creating opportunities for people to connect.
Jay’s work at the Chamber is built around a simple philosophy: membership only works if you use it. “Chamber membership is like a gym membership,” he told Chip. “If you use it, it works. If not, it doesn’t.” From hosting luncheons for community events like Kickin’ Chicken with over 2,000 attendees, Jay ensures the Chamber is more than a directory, it is an engine of visibility and support.
His approach reflects his own transition from executive to advocate. After decades in corporate leadership, Jay found purpose in championing small businesses and mentoring new entrepreneurs. He sees the Chamber as a bridge, connecting local leaders, new residents, and long-time community members. He also hosts a local radio show, shining a spotlight on the people and businesses shaping Florence.
For Jay, the decision to stay in Florence came down to more than career. It was about people and belonging. “You can stay in your house, or you can embrace the community,” he said. “That’s what makes the difference.” He has chosen the latter, investing in civic organizations like Rotary and serving as an ambassador for Florence’s unique character and work ethic.
Outside of work, Jay is a husband, grandfather of six, and an adventurer at heart. He recently traveled to Cortona, Italy, in the Tuscany region and admits he is not a “same-vacation-every-year guy.” His favorite fictional character is Indiana Jones, a fitting match for his curiosity, problem-solving mindset, and love of new experiences.
As Chip noted, Jay embodies the role of community connector, someone who turns a two-year tour into a lifetime legacy. By blending corporate experience with a heart for service, Jay has become a fixture in Florence’s growth and vitality. Whether through advocacy, ribbon cuttings, or simply showing up, his impact continues to ripple through the businesses and people he serves.
