In this episode of Coffee with Cool People, host Chip Munn sat down with Scotty Powell, Chief Meteorologist at WBTW, to talk about weather, community, and finding joy in the work you love.
Scotty’s fascination with weather started young. Growing up in Morganton, North Carolina, he visited a weather studio and was instantly hooked. That spark carried him through studies in Environmental Science at Appalachian State and Meteorology at Penn State, eventually leading him to Myrtle Beach, where he now serves as Chief Meteorologist.
For Scotty, meteorology is more than forecasts. It’s about keeping people safe and informed. “Meteorology touches everything, from airlines to Amazon deliveries, football games to Waffle House,” he told Chip. His commitment to accuracy and public awareness means he never really disconnects. Whether tracking storms with advanced technology or relying on fundamentals when systems fail, Scotty is always ready to serve.
Beyond the forecast, Scotty has built creative platforms that bring his passions to life. He hosts Chippin’ Around the Grand Strand, a golf lifestyle series, and created Around the Turn, a NASCAR-focused franchise with deep ties to Darlington Raceway. His storytelling makes weather, sports, and local culture both accessible and engaging.
Chip noted how Scotty’s energy extends well beyond the studio. He is a beach lover, drone pilot, and aspiring videographer. He’s also an avid golfer and lifelong NASCAR fan, passions that fuel his unique blend of professional and personal storytelling. And while his career keeps him in the public eye, he also spends much of his personal time caring for his mother as she recovers from a stroke, another reflection of his loyalty and compassion.
When asked about his favorite fictional character, Scotty chose Jim Halpert from The Office, a fitting choice for someone who balances humor with hard work. “He has fun, but when it’s time to get serious, he gets the work done,” Scotty said.
Scotty Powell is more than the familiar face delivering Myrtle Beach’s forecasts. He’s a connector who turns weather education into something engaging, makes golf approachable, and brings fresh energy to NASCAR. Rooted in the Carolinas, his creativity and passion for people reflect the very spirit of Coffee with Cool People.
