In this episode of Coffee with Cool People, host Chip Munn spoke with Rodney Berry, a Dillon, South Carolina native whose career spans journalism, politics, economic development, and media. A former college football player, Berry approaches life with a competitor’s mindset and the motto that “life is a subscription to be fully used.”
Berry began his career in journalism with the Florence Morning News before launching his own local papers. He later co-founded and published She Magazine, a women-focused publication that showed him the excellence women bring to business and leadership. “They were goal-oriented, motivated, and had more fun doing it,” he recalled. That lesson has shaped how he approaches collaboration and leadership ever since.
From publishing, Berry transitioned to public service. He served as Mayor of Dillon and later became District Director for Congressman Tom Rice. That period included one of the most contentious moments in recent political history, the Trump impeachment vote. Watching Rice follow his conscience, even when it cost him politically, left a lasting impression. “I learned the importance of following your conscience even when it costs you,” Berry said.
Today, Berry leads economic development efforts for Dillon County. His approach combines data, strategic planning, and storytelling to attract industries and investments. With the Dillon Inland Port, access to I-95, and a low cost of living, he positions the county as a place with real advantages for business. He also plays an active role in the NESA regional alliance, helping put the Pee Dee region on the map.
At the same time, Berry has returned to his creative roots through social media and his podcast, The Lion’s Den. Whether on Facebook, TikTok, or local broadcast, he uses storytelling to spread positivity and uplift others. “God never made an extra person. Everyone has a story,” he said. It’s a principle that guides both his professional and personal life.
For Berry, everything comes back to faith, family, and authenticity. He wants to set a strong example for his son while staying true to his roots. His favorite fictional character, Ric Flair, reflects both his competitive edge and sense of humor. “Ric Flair just keeps on ticking… and that figure four is no joke,” he laughed.
Chip noted that Berry brings faith, grit, and heart into every role, whether leading a city, mentoring business owners, or inspiring his community one TikTok at a time. His story is a reminder that leadership isn’t just about positions or titles. It’s about living fully, leading with integrity, and leaving a positive mark on the people around you.
